Solitude and Joy (Cathedral Choral Society)

  • Washington National Cathedral 3101 Wisconsin Avenue Northwest Washington, DC, 20016 United States (map)

Hymns, chants, and anthems invoke awe in the brilliance of the stars and earth, inviting wonder and contemplation. The program features premieres of new works by Ēriks Ešenvalds and Alex Berko, as well as works by Sebastian Currier, Gabriel Jackson, Herbert Howells, John Tavener, James MacMillan, Pēteris Vasks, Arvo Pärt, and Maurice Duruflé.

Our musical journey is inspired by lyrical prose by French writer Pascal Quignard: "Without solitude, without the test of time, without the passion for silence, without the excitation and retention of the whole body, without a frightened stumbling, without wandering into a region of shade and invisibility, without memory of animality, without melancholy, without isolation in melancholy, there is no joy."

The chorus will be led by Grammy-winning guest conductor Donald Nally, with cellist Thomas Mesa and organist Scott Dettra.
