A Celebration of Latvian Music & Culture (Westmoreland Festival Chorus)

  • Latvian Lutheran Church 400 Hurley Avenue Rockville, MD, 20850 United States (map)

The Westmoreland Festival Chorus and Orchestra have teamed up with the Embassy of Latvia, the American Latvian Association, and Latvian Lutheran Church of Washington to help celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Latvian Independence! We will present a FREE concert of all Latvian Composers, and raise funds for the Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Service!

There will be two opportunities to see this performance:
-Sunday, March 11th – as part of the 10:00am Service at Westmoreland UCC (Bethesda)
-Sunday, March 11th – as a concert at 4:00pm at Latvian Lutheran Church (Rockville)

The 4:00pm Concert will present additional music selections and spoken word, and a reception (with wine) will be provided by the members of the Latvian Lutheran Church. We will collect a freewill offering for Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Services, whose President and CEO, Linda Hartke, will say a few words.

The concept for this concert began like many other WFC March concerts - a Lenten themed program to present during a service at Westmoreland Congregational UCC... However, after stumbling upon the gorgeous work for chorus and strings "Passion and Resurrection" by Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds, it grew into a collaboration with the local Latvian Community, and has given us the opportunity to learn a great deal about the rich musical culture of Latvia, which celebrates its centenary of Independence this year. Now the program, which will also include works by fellow Latvian composers Pēteris Vasks and Maija Einfelde, will also be presented at Latvian Lutheran Church of Washington DC, and will raise funds for the Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Service, which transforms U.S. communities by ensuring that newcomers are not only self-sufficient but also become connected and contributing members of their adopted communities in the United States.

Whether you are interested in learning about the local Latvian community and their history, supporting an organization that helps immigrants and refugees, or just connecting to Lent through beautiful music, this concert has something for you.

Join soprano Aani Bourassa, music director Alec Davis, the Festival Chorus, an 11-piece string orchestra, and our gracious hosts and partners!

PROGRAM:
-Pater Noster (Vasks)
